Artist Statement:  I have just recently retired from the field of Psychology and re-entered the Art World.  I started taking classes in Japanese calligraphy, acrylics, special mediums and abstract painting.  I have also been obsessed with water after moving from Key West to San Francisco and joining a Synchronized Swimming team.  The “In-Synchro Series 2007,” some in oil and some in acrylic, are mostly a tongue-in-cheek look at the traditional and sometimes old-fashion/kitsch aspects of the sport of synchro;

Women with their hair knoxed back in buns, glittery swimsuits and way too much water proof make-up, all of which detract from how incredibly talented and powerful these athletes are.

The next series, also completed in 2007, “Aqua-Pals”  I did in oil and includes six paintings of dogs swimming mostly from very unusual angles which involved me lying at the bottom of the pool to capture the image on film before I chose which ones to paint. Dogs seem to have a love/hate relationship with the water that makes them look so comical while moving in it.  I find the different perspective challenging and humorous at the same time.

I just recently started an “Older is Better” vineyard series involving a mixed media approach using, watercolor, sumi ink and a wine reduction. I am trying to convey the Wabi-Sabi concept of the beauty of sparse, organic and rustic impermanence. Since staying abstract is difficult for me this series really helps me pull back and stay with what is only essential for the idea to emerge.   I hope you enjoyed what I have presented and if you would like to see more, please don’t hesitate to request digital pictures of my paintings.
